Brilliant Foodie Invention: Microwave Oven

Media_httpstatichowst_rqahf

Did you know the microwave oven was accidentally discovered in 1945 by Perry Spencer? He was experimenting with a new vacuum tube called a magnetron while doing research for the Raytheon Corporation. While experimenting, a candy bar in his pocket began to melt. Then he tried popcorn and it began to pop. Two years later, in 1947, Raytheon introduced the Radarange, which weighed 750 pounds, was 51/2 feet tall, and cost about $5,000. Obviously, all of the foregoing made it unpopular with consumers. However, in 1967, a much more popular 100-volt, countertop version was introduced at a price of $495.
