MusicDNA™: The Future of Music?
The MP3 file format that emerged two decades ago will soon be getting a makeover from its inventors in the form of MusicDNA™. Recently revealed at the Cannes’ Midem music conference, this new file format is being billed as a successor to the MP3 and the future of music. According to Bach Technology in Germany, MusicDNA™ is an enhanced music file that will contain lyrics, artwork, updated tour dates, latest merchandising, videos and twitter feeds, all alongside the track itself. This additional content will appear in an application player that can be customized and freely downloaded. Its competition are, of course, the iTunes LP, which was released by Apple in September 2009, and CMX, a similar music file format scheduled to be used by Sony, Warner and Universal in the second quarter of 2010. Both formats offer users lyrics, album artwork and bonus tracks, however, they don't broadcast the ability to update themselves via the Web like MusicDNA™. Further, MusicDNA™ files will be able to contain up to 32GB of extra information in the file itself. Tommy Boy Records and U.K. indie label Beggars Banquet are the only major labels reported to sign up for MusicDNA™ so far. While the aforementioned music file formats may presently address consumer wants and needs, the future of listening and backing up music (with or without album artwork, etc.) may be in the cloud for those who choose to suspend themselves there. According to CNET, Apple recently spoke to a few of the major labels about offering a free streaming music service in the cloud that could possibly start this year. This service would allow "iTunes users a means to store copies of their music libraries on Apple's servers. The benefits to an iTunes user would include the ability to back up music and access songs off the Web from any Internet-connected device and conceivably from anywhere in the world", according to CNET.MusicDNA™ files and its player are scheduled to be released in beta this spring, with a full release scheduled for summer 2010.Links:
