It appears Panasonic is pulling the cord on the Technics SL-1200MK6 turntable. In a statement issued to Tokyo Reporter the company stated:
“Panasonic decided to end production mainly due to a decline in demand for these analog products and also the growing difficulty of procuring key analog components necessary to sustain production."
Many DJs can breathe a sigh of relief as other models in the series do not seem to be affected.
Update | 11.02.2010:
We just received the following letter from Tokyo Reporter:

Here is an interesting DJ setup that Gergwerk did as his senior degree project for the Kansas City Art Institute. What does everyone think?

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Using two iPads, a few apps, and a mixer, Rana Sobhany has managed to create a DJ set up that costs around $1,200.00. While her video demonstration isn't going to win her any DJ awards, she does give us an ever so slight glimpse into the future of DJing.

Late last month, Funny or Die featured a two part video called DJ Intervention, which is the latest creation of Los Angeles music maniac Ali Maclean. Guests on the show include DJ Rhettmatic from the Beat Junkies, Arabian Prince from NWA, Adam 12 from She Wants Revenge and Ken Jordan of The Crystal Method. This two part series (part 3 is hopefully coming soon) is a comical take on the reality shows you see nowadays where concerned relatives and friends set up interventions for drug abusers and the like.
A DJ who needs an intervention may exhibit the following symptoms: (1) doesn't know what vinyl is; (2) unable to mix; (3) wears loud clothing; (4) thinks Serato is a pasta; (5) listens to the album Paris by Paris Hilton constantly; (6) uses an iPod to DJ; and (7) doesn't visit EF on a weekly basis.
If you, or someone you know, is exhibiting the foregoing symptoms, please contact the EF DJ Intervention Hotline at 1-800-HELP-ADJ. You can remain anonymous.

Unbelievable as it may seem, Chevrolet has made the world's first DJ car and world's biggest record player. The modified Chevrolet Spark, when turned on it's side, can be transformed in about 20 minutes to house a platform for the DJ with CD decks, a mixer and vinyl turntable wheels. An indie group, The Mystery Jets, will be part of the car launch and UK tour, and will debut some new songs from their upcoming album.

Ruth Flowers, a 69 year old from Bristol, England, is heating up Parisian nightlife with electronic music. Her DJ name? Mamy Rock. "I've got no intention of retiring - unless I drop dead. And I'd much rather go out with a bang than linger."That's the spirit.

Global Inheritance, a non-profit organization "working to empower individuals worldwide to think and act creatively in solving global imbalances" is looking for a few good DJs with friends who can act as "hamsters" at their The Energy Facotry Sweatshop Mixer. DJs who are selected need to bring 12 fit friends along with them. Why? Because your friends will be responsible for helping power the turntables/CDJs and sound equipment by running on hamster wheels, riding bikes, turning hand cranks, and riding seesaws. There is a $50.00 entry fee, but this is waived if you and your friends do a good job for 30 minutes. For a job well done, DJs receive a t-shirt and bragging rights on their resume.
