Parasites Inside You: The Pork Tapeworm (Part 1)

It makes for a terrific horror movie: parasitic monsters living inside you.

However, this is not fiction, it really happens. It is entirely possible that a parasite has decided to make its dwelling within your innards and you do not even know it. Some parasites can live inside your body for years without any noticable symptoms due to their uncanny ability to remain undectected by your immune system. Usually, symptoms only appear when your immune system recognizes something is amiss.

Several species parasitise humans after being consumed in underprepared meat such as pork (T. solium), beef (T. saginata), and fish (Diphyllobothrium spp.), or in food prepared in conditions of poor hygiene (Hymenolepis spp. or Echinococcus spp.).

This month, we will examine the pork tapeworm (T. Solium), more specifically cysticercosis, which infects the organ tissue, including the muscle, brain, eyes, spine, and skin, of pigs and humans in Asia, Africa, South America, parts of Southern Europe and pockets of North America.

Chocolate Milk Does a Body Good...or Does It?

According to new research published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, and funded by the National Dairy Council, drinking low-fat chocolate milk after vigorous workout builds muscle, reduces fat and increases aerobic endurance.

Gross-out cigarette labels are working in the U.S.

Calls to a national hotline, 1-800-Quit-Now, surpassed more than 4,800 last Tuesday and 3,200 on Wednesday after the 9 new images by the FDA were unveiled to the public. A typical Tuesday or Wednesday in June sees about 2,000 calls, according to a report by the Associated Press.

Cigarette makers will have to begin using the new images by the fall of 2012.
