It makes for a terrific horror movie: parasitic monsters living inside you.
However, this is not fiction, it really happens. It is entirely possible that a parasite has decided to make its dwelling within your innards and you do not even know it. Some parasites can live inside your body for years without any noticable symptoms due to their uncanny ability to remain undectected by your immune system. Usually, symptoms only appear when your immune system recognizes something is amiss.
Several species parasitise humans after being consumed in underprepared meat such as pork (T. solium), beef (T. saginata), and fish (Diphyllobothrium spp.), or in food prepared in conditions of poor hygiene (Hymenolepis spp. or Echinococcus spp.).
This month, we will examine the pork tapeworm (T. Solium), more specifically cysticercosis, which infects the organ tissue, including the muscle, brain, eyes, spine, and skin, of pigs and humans in Asia, Africa, South America, parts of Southern Europe and pockets of North America.
