Jamie Oliver's TED Prize Wish: Teach every child about food

In December 2009, Jamie Oliver was awarded the 2010 TED Prize for his campaigns to "create change on both the individual and governmental level" in order to "bring attention to the changes Englanders and now Americans need to make in their lifestyles and diet." Starting this year, the TED Prize ($100,000) is given to one person and they are "granted" one wish to change the world, which they unveil at TED.

Here are a few brief points he made in his speech:

  • Food related illnesses are the biggest cause of death in the U.S.
  • Children consume a wheelbarrow full of sugar due to sugared milk every five years.
  • Every major supermarket should have a "Food Ambassador."
  • Every child should leave school knowing how to cook ten recipes that will save their lives.
